The ISVA team at Survivor’s Network provide signposting and practical advocacy support for women and men over the age of 14 who have experienced sexual violence and are thinking about reporting to the police, or who have an open police investigation, or who have concerns about a case that has previously been reported to the police.
What does an ISVA do?
The ISVA team at Survivor’s Network provide signposting and practical advocacy support for women and men over the age of 14 who have experienced sexual violence and are thinking about reporting to the police, or who have an open police investigation, or who have concerns about a case that has previously been reported to the police.
What does an ISVA do?
- Giving information and advice about a person’s options in the aftermath of a sexual assault or rape.
- Informing survivors of recent or historic sexual violence about how to report to the police.
- Supporting survivors throughout the police investigation and acting as a point of contact/advocate for the client throughout the process.
- Offering signposting or a referral for specialist counselling.
- Referring and supporting someone to access specialist sexual health screening and follow up.
- Liaising with the police and the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) to ensure survivors are kept updated regarding the progress of the case and are appropriately informed in cases where no further action is taken
- Offering support around court cases, including pre-court visits, victim impact statements, support throughout the trial
- Supporting clients to make a claim for compensation to CICA (Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority), if appropriate
- Making referrals and signposting to relevant agencies for further support in other aspects of the client’s life that has been impacted by sexual violence or abuse, such as housing, benefits or mental health services
- Liaising with other agencies to ensure well-being and personal safety of survivors are prioritised.
